So solve for x? using the quadratic formula.
a = 2, b = 4, c = -5

x = (-b +/- [tex] \sqrt{b^{2}-4ac } [/tex])/2a
   =  (-4 +/- [tex] \sqrt{16-4(2)(-5)} [/tex])/2(2)
   =  (-4 +/- [tex] \sqrt{16+40} [/tex])/4
   =  (-4 +/- 2[tex] \sqrt{14} [/tex])/4
   =  (-4 +/- 2[tex] \sqrt{14} [/tex])/4
   =  -1 +/- [tex] \sqrt{14} [/tex]/2
