I thought I multiplied 3 times it self 9 times.

It does mean to means to multiply 3 times itself 9 times

[tex] 3^{9} = 3*3*3*3*3*3*3*3*3 = 9*9*9*9*3 = 81*81*3 =[/tex] 19,683
