what are ways to stop erosion? and what are are benefits and downfalls to that method?

One common method to stop erosion is to plant shrubs or trees near the slope or wherever the erosion is occurring. A benefit could be aesthetically pleasing to the eye. A downfall could be the cost of the plants and potentially labor.
