If you're going to write negative exponents, please enclose them inside parentheses:

12 / c^(-8)
                                       12      8d^2
12/c^-8d^2 becomes  --------- - ---------
                                       c^8        1

Here the LCD is c^8, so the above expression becomes:

 12         c^8*d^2       12-(c^8)(d^2)
------- - ------------- = ---------------------
 c^8          c^8                   c^8
